The State of Fashion Biennale is organised by
State of Fashion, based in Arnhem, The Netherlands.

Curated by Rachel Dedman and Louise Bennetts, State of Fashion 2024 | Ties that Bind showcased creative practices in fashion, textiles and contemporary art from across the Global South. This edition of the Biennale explored the complexities of tradition, the political power of clothing, and alternative approaches to exploitative fashion systems.

Ties that Bind had a decentralised structure. The Biennale unfolded across four places: the home site in Arnhem, the Netherlands, and three sister sites in Nairobi, Kenya, Bengaluru, India, and São Paulo, Brazil. In each sister site, an interlocutor-curator – Sunny Dolat, Kallol Datta and Hanayrá Negreiros – was invited to develop a project that responds to the Biennale’s themes from their perspective, embedded in their local context and community.

This edition of the Biennale celebrated fashion in an expanded field, through critical creative practices from all over the world. How are artists from the Global South addressing and contesting colonial legacies embedded in clothing and cloth? How are designers evolving inherited traditions, and engaging with the urgencies of our time? Rooted in the universal intimacy of fabric, Ties that Bind sought to amplify the kinships and connectedness among global practices, and share the powerful human stories woven into what we wear.

By virtue of being made by hand and worn on the body, textiles and dress are intimately connected to people, society and the political. For hundreds of years, the textile trade was entwined with colonial systems of exploitation, but clothing has always remained a mode of resistance, as well as an instrument of repression.

Today’s global fashion system is heavily exploitative of the world’s human and environmental resources, and it is predominantly the Global South that bears the burden of demand for fast, cheap clothing. From the practice of waste colonialism – where developed countries dump their textile and clothing waste in developing countries – to the inhuman treatment of garment workers, the dominant economic model is unethical and unsustainable.

Tradition is a deceptively complex term. Fashion and the making of clothing are practices defined by constant change and transformation. Although we associate tradition with the past, it is never at odds with the innovative. In Dismantling Tradition, fashion designers from across the Global South revel in the historical techniques they inherit,

Cloth is a building block of humans’ social and material lives; from birth we are swaddled, in death we are shrouded. The very word fashion means to make, to form. The technology of textiles is fundamental and ancient, and clothes are the changeable, ephemeral homes through which we navigate the world.

A free V&A display curated by Rachel Dedman22 May 2025 - 31 May 2026, V&A South Kensington, London

Tatreez: Palestinian Embroidery is a display in the Jameel Gallery,
Islamic Middle East at the V&A South Kensington.

Tatreez is the Arabic word for the elaborate hand embroidery found on Palestinian dress. Renowned for its beauty and complexity, tatreez is characterised by remarkable regional diversity. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, every area of Palestine was known for particular embroidery techniques, stitches and motifs. The clothing a woman made for herself reflected her identity and her origins, as well as the changing nature of her life. This display brings together examples of historic Palestinian dress from the V&A collection — representing the regions of Ramallah, Bethlehem and the Southern Coast — alongside contemporary embroidered work by fashion designer Zeid Hijazi and artist Aya Haidar.A short film has been made to accompany the display.

Featuring the collections of the Palestinian Museum and V&A

Curated by Rachel Dedman
26 June 2025 - Spring 2026, V&A Dundee, UK

Thread Memory: Embroidery from Palestine is organised by V&A Dundee
in collaboration with Hayy Jameel, Jeddah, where the exhibition was first
shown from 23 January - 17 April 2025.

Tatreez is an ancient practice of elaborate hand-embroidery, and each region of Palestine has its own distinct and identifiable style, making embroidery a language as much as a craft. For centuries, a Palestinian woman’s dress – its cut, colour, textiles, stitches and motifs – reflected her life story. Written into garments are the signs of youth or grief, the marks of motherhood and rural life, as well as the traces of social, political and economic change in Palestine, from the late nineteenth century to the present.

2025 marks 45 years of Dundee’s twin city relationship with Nablus, Palestine and this exhibition takes the opportunity to spotlight Nabulsi dress and tell the story of the historic connection between Scotland and Palestine, through material from Dundee collections and Palestinian archives.

Thread Memory also features contemporary embroidered dress, including newly commissioned looks from Palestinian fashion designers building upon inherited cultural traditions. Work by contemporary artists engaging with tatreez will sit next to the traditional dress on display, alongside interviews with Palestinian embroiderers.

Thread Memory: Embroidery from Palestine is made in partnership with Art Jameel, the Palestinian Museum, V&A South Kensington and V&A Dundee. It is based on an exhibition of the same title that was exhibited at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from January to April 2025.

Curated by Rachel Dedman 30 November 2025 - 16 March 2026, V&A South Kensington, London, UKJameel Prize: Moving Images is organised by the V&A in collaboration with Art Jameel.
The exhibition toured to Cartwright Hall, Bradford, as part of its year as City of Culture,
April-August 2025, and will be on show at Hayy Jameel, Jeddah, from November 2025-May 2026.

The Jameel Prize
is the V&A’s award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic
culture, history, society and ideas. This seventh edition is devoted to moving
image and digital media, and the exhibition brings together the work of seven
finalists who were selected
by a jury from over 300 submissions. Their diverse practices span film, photography,
animation, sound, sculpture and virtual reality. In a series of intimate,
immersive encounters, the works in Jameel Prize: Moving Images engage
with issues relating to identity, history and community.

Water
and ecology are recurring themes in this year’s exhibition. Several artists explore
the relationship between landscape and spiritual traditions, and the ways
industrialisation is destroying the environment and altering the social fabric of
the Middle East and South Asia. Others address the writing of history by
examining the destruction of monuments and by forging alternative approaches to
museums and collections. Reflecting the enduring power of the hand-made alongside
digital technology, the exhibition presents artists as storytellers.

8 July - 29 October 2023, Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, UK
Material Power: Palestinian Embroidery is organised by
Kettle’s Yard in collaboration with The Whitworth,
The University of Manchester, where it will travel from
24 November 2023 – 7 April 2024.

Material Power: Palestinian Embroidery explores the historical life and contemporary significance of Palestinian embroidery. This ancient and beautiful practice remains an important living tradition and the most prominent cultural material of Palestine today. Curated by Rachel Dedman, the exhibition looks at the ways in which embroidery, primarily undertaken by women, has evolved through a century of turbulent history for the Palestinian people.

This is the first major exhibition of Palestinian embroidery in the UK for over 30 years, with more than 40 dresses and embroidered objects on display lent from important private collections in Jordan and Palestine. Every dress tells a story: whether about the lives of women with their astonishing skills and creativity in the early decades of the last century, or the trauma of displacement as a result of the Nakba of 1948. And reflecting the decades since: in which the vibrant colours and patterns of Palestinian embroidery, now often created for a global market by groups of women, have become symbolic of nationhood, memory, and resistance. Alongside historic dresses are artworks by five contemporary artists, films of embroiderers speaking about their work and rarely seen archive material.

The exhibition at Kettle’s Yard is accompanied by Rachel Dedman’s 2016 book, At the Seams: A Political History of Palestinian Embroidery, published by the Palestinian Museum, available to purchase in the Kettle’s Yard shop.

The exhibition is generously supported by The Orange Tree Trust and the Material Power: Palestinian Embroidery Supporters Circle.

Beirut Mapped is an editorial project that invites reflections on the city of Beirut from the perspective of artists and writers who live there.
Lebanon is living through a crippling economic crisis alongside the global pandemic, and coping with the effects of the devastating port explosion of 4 August 2020. Popular uprisings against government corruption began in October 2019, and the movement has continued around lockdowns.
In the midst of struggle and loss—of human life, homes, and cultural heritage—what places or objects best capture the city’s present, speak to its history, and look to its future?
Five Beirut-based artists and writers were commissioned to choose an object or place in, from or about the city, and to develop a creative text in response. Connecting these to objects from the Arab Image Foundation’s archives, and the V&A’s collection, added a further layer to the project. Beirut Mapped sought to build a partial and imperfect map of Beirut, through its material and intangible traces.
Beirut Mapped is organised in partnership with the Arab Image Foundation, Beirut, and is part of the V&A’s Jameel Programming.

Curated by Rachel DedmanThe exhibition was shown at the V&A, London, from 18 September – 28 November 2021.
It toured internationally to Centro Cultural La Moneda in Santiago, Chile; the Franklin Rawson Museum in San Juan, Argentina; and the Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai, UAE, in 2022 and 2023.

The sixth edition of the V&A’s Jameel Prize was devoted to contemporary design inspired by Islamic tradition. Jameel Prize: Poetry to Politics showcased the work of eight designers from India, Iran, Lebanon, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the UK.

The finalists’ diverse practices span graphic design and fashion, typography and textiles, installation and activism. Their work addresses the personal and the political, interpreting the past in creative and critical ways. Jameel Prize: Poetry to Politics reflects the ways in which Islamic art and culture remain rich sources of inspiration for contemporary design.

For this edition, applications to the Jameel Prize were accepted via open call and nomination. Over 400 entries were received from designers all over the world. An international jury selected eight finalists for the exhibition at the V&A, and the winner, who receives £25,000. Ajlan Gharem was announced as the winner of the sixth Jameel Prize in an online ceremony on 15 September 2021.

17 October 2019 - 1 March 2020

The exhibition was commissioned for Ashkal Alwan's Home Works 8: A Forum on Cultural Practices. It was exhibited at Sursock Museum, Beirut.
The exhibition was named among the best 15 in the world in 2019, by Hyperallergic.

Artist and writer Helen Khal (1923-2009) was at the centre of her generation of artists in Lebanon in the 1960s and 1970s. A prolific painter, co-founder of Gallery One, art critic for The Daily Star, and author of a book on the female artist in Lebanon, Khal left a quiet mark on the art landscape in Beirut. Underwritten in history, Khal’s life and practice are the catalysts for exploring the work of those artists to whom she was close, in life and in art: Chafic Abboud, Yvette Achkar, Etel Adnan, Huguette Caland, Saloua Raouda Choucair, Simone Fattal, Farid Haddad, Aref Rayess, and Dorothy Salhab-Kazemi.

The exhibition addresses themes of love, sexuality and motherhood; the relationship between the visual art and literary landscapes of the time; and the galleries and studios in which public collaborations and private kinships were forged. Taking an intimate approach to a fabled period, At the still point of the turning world, there is the dance unfolds a rich picture of the friendships, connections, modes of exchange, common concerns, and differing approaches of some of the best-known and least-remembered artists of the mid-twentieth century in Lebanon.

Radio Earth Hold is a collective and project by Laure de Selys, Arjuna Neuman, and Rachel Dedman. Our work explores the potential for planetary forms of solidarity. Using sound and radio as hermeneutics, our work traces echoes between the anti-occupation movement in Palestine and anti-racism movements in the North American context.Radio Earth Hold takes the form of public events and distributed broadcasts.

REH#1: The Colonial Voice is a broadcast that examines British Mandate radio as a colonial instrument in Palestine; Israeli control of Palestinian telecommunications as an architecture of occupation; and the use of radio as a platform for Palestinian resistance. It connects these to the birth of Mni Wiconi at Standing Rock, radical midwifery practices, and the acousmatics of sound in the womb. The research argues for acousmatic sound—reverb without a cause, or echo without a source—as a manifestation of the colonial voice, a hijacking of the uterine experience in the service of biblical narratives, of the kind that justify settler-colonialism.

Broadening beyond political struggle to the phenomenon of ‘natural radio’, The Colonial Voice addresses how electromagnetic radiation exists all around us, functioning at a bigger-than-planetary scale. How might this reorganise relationships between the individuals and the world? What solidarity is engendered by the recognition of our participation in the transmission of planetary sound?

REH #1: The Colonial Voice was commissioned as part of the collateral program of Qalandiya International IV, the Palestinian Biennial, and supported by the Serpentine Galleries, London. REH #2: Sedentarized Sonics was commissioned from artist Inas Halabi, and supported by the Serpentine Galleries, London. REH #3: Pitch Blue is commissioned and supported by Nottingham Contemporary, as part of Sonic Continuum, curated by Sofia Lemos. The broadcast is forthcoming in 2020.
